Why does automotive leather feel firmer or stiffer than furniture leather?

Ever notice that car Nappa leather tends to feel firmer than the leather on your sofa? That’s not a flaw—it’s a key feature.

Automotive-grade Nappa leather is tanned to handle heat, sun, spills, and everyday wear and tear. It’s treated with special coatings to boost durability and UV resistance, which naturally makes it stiffer. To get technical, the leather basically has a shorter duration cycle in the drum, during the finishing process.

Genuine leather used for other interiors like residential, hotel, restaurant, commercial spaces on the other hand, aren’t exposed to the same extremes as your average car, SUV, minibus or RV—so such leather is tanned in a way, to stay soft, supple, and cozy. They get a longer duration cycle in the drum.

Different leather for different applications – one is made for comfort, the other for the long haul. But there is nothing to stop you from using your favourite automotive Nappa leather on your sofa or armchair.
